Episode :
The Portuguese Heritage in Rio de Janeiro

Watch trailer

Bel Coelho takes a look at Brazil’s colonial past and explores Portuguese cooking in Rio de Janeiro, the country’s historical Portuguese metropolis. Traveling back in time, she investigates the Portuguese settlers who played a part in the birth and construction of Brazil.

Bel Coelho samples breads from a family bakery run by Alberto, who is carrying on his father’s tradition of importing flour from Portugal. She also tastes a well-known Portuguese dessert: Belém 'pastel'. Then Alexandre teaches her to make 'lagareira' salt cod, a dish from the Beira region in Portugal, where the fish is cooked with coarse-cut onions, garlic and bay leaves, and served with crushed potatoes.
